Mesut Ozil throws his wrist band away in disgust

For the first time since 1938, Germany have failed to progress to the knockout stages of the competition.

And Matthaus, who has already criticised Mesut Ozil’s performances in Russia, believes the current side lacked the qualities of a classic German side.

When asked what was wrong with the team by BeInSports, he replied: “Too much confidence, we didn’t play with the right mentality in not only today; all three games.

“This was not the real German team.

Matthaus lifted the 1990 World Cup with Germany as captain

“And maybe, Joachim Low didn’t find the right moment to freshen up the team with a younger generation of players.

“He had all the World Cup winners from 2014 in his team – in the defence, in the midfield in the offence.

“But the style changed. I miss the speed in our game, the creativity in our game, the power in our game.

“Everything was great in the last 30/40 years in German football – this team show everything opposite.

“For this, I am not upset because they don’t have the right to go to the next round with this performance.

“They were not playing good.”

Joachim Low couldn’t motivate his team to produce a breakthrough goal

After a surprise 1-0 defeat to a vibrant Mexico side in their opening game, Low’s side required a last-minute winner against Sweden to leave them with a chance of qualifying.

However, they were unable to get the necessary result.

And Matthaus, a legend at Bayern Munich, believes this may be result of a drop in the level of German domestic football.

He added: “We are maybe too comfortable? Everything is going well in the Bundesliga; we have a lot of goals, we have young players, we have full stadiums, and maybe we were lying a bit.

“No, in the national competition we saw what was.

“Football is hard work, you have to give your heart, to give your passion and I didn’t feel (maybe Neuer) but not the rest, was not fighting enough and was not playing with their passion and with their heart of the German flag.”
